Project description

The project’s overall aim is to design, implement and validate an image capture and analysis system that automatically monitors the larval development of Hermetia illucens in controlled rearing environments, as a preliminary step towards the advanced digitalisation of the production process. Specifically, a dedicated hardware prototype has been designed and built, based on a capture station installed in the company’s rearing chambers. A software pipeline has also been developed, combining computer vision and deep learning techniques to detect larvae, estimate morphological metrics and analyse associated environmental data.
